Athletics

South Hagerstown High School is a proud member of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and the Central Maryland Conference (CMC). The MPSSAA is the governing body of all public high schools in the state of Maryland. The CMC is an athletic conference featuring six of the seven WCPS schools and all 10 FCPS schools. The CMC offers a championship season in every varsity sports except for unified sports and football. You can find updated athletic schedules for each school in both counties at washingtoncountycmc.org or frederickcountycmc.org
Known as the Rebels, South Hagerstown's athletic department offers 22 varsity sports, many of which also offer developmental junior varsity level.
Athletic seasons are played in the fall, winter and spring. Before students can tryout for a sport, they must register for the sport they wish to tryout for on Arbiter and have a current physical on file with the school's Meritus Health athletic trainer. Physicals are good for one calendar year. Students must have both items completed before being allowed to participate in tryouts/practices. A physical turned in during the fall can cover an athlete for the entire school year but they still are required to register on Arbiter for each season during the school year if they wish to play multiple sports. You can find a list of sports by season and the first allowed tryout date in Maryland for those seasons further down this page.
High school athletics are an extension of the classroom. Athletics help students develop leadership and social skills, learn the importance of sportsmanship, develop and promote school and community pride among many other benefits.
In an effort to help schools offset rising costs to allow students the opportunity to continue playing, WCPS requires a $60 activity fee to be collected from every athlete each season they participate during the school year. These fees help cover costs of bus transportation to away games, cost of officials, uniform and equipment purchases and other important operating costs. Activity fees are due by the first play date of the regular season. If a student and their family is facing a financial hardship in paying their activity fee, please contact our athletic director Dwayne Freeman. Your conversation will be kept private other than connecting with available resources at South High to help cover the activity fee. Activity fees can be paid in cash, a check made out to South Hagerstown High School or online through GoFan. Activity fees paid in cash or checks should be delivered to the athletic director and should have the student's name and sport included.
At South High, our athletic department emphasizes the student part of student-athlete. All students must maintain academic eligibility for extracurricular activities as set forth by WCPS policy in addition to being in class and on-time to all classes during the school day every day, not just on game day.
Our athletic department and student-athletes are supported by partnerships in the community and by the support of the South Hagerstown High Athletic Boosters. You can learn more information about both by visiting the athletic department website and the Athletic Boosters website.

Admission Prices and Media at home sporting events
Most WCPS athletic contests charge admission. All events (with the exception of unified sports) held inside the stadium or gym charge admission. Unless a game is played as part of a tournament, a state playoff game, or at a rented facility (such as Meritus Park), admission for baseball, softball, golf and tennis is free.
South Hagerstown High School's athletic department has a Media policy in place for all home sporting events. If you would like to take photos, live stream or any other type of media coverage of a sporting event, please review the media policy and submit a credential request no less than 24 hours prior to the start of a contest. You can find more information on the media requests page of the athletic department website.
WCPS Admission Prices:
Adults: $6

SHHS Students with current Good Standing month sticker on their ID: Free
WCPS Gold Cards, CMC passes and WCPS/FCPS/CCPS IDs are accepted for complimentary admission for regular season contests only. Only MPSSAA passes are accepted for state playoff contests. All SHHS students must be in school and on-time the day of the event (or the day before a weekend contest) in order to gain entry to all home sporting events. Most athletic contests offer an advance online ticket option through GoFan.
Sportsmanship is the most important aspect of every athletic contest. Disrespectful or disruptive behaviors, language or interference are unacceptable and subject to ejection from the game. Please help us be role models at South High and positively support the players, coaches, officials and other spectators.
